Joint Replacement

Knee Replacement

Arthritis is a condition which can occur in the knee when the cartilage has been worn away. This leads to knee pain, stiffness, and swelling. If arthritis cannot be improved with nonsurgical methods, surgeons can perform:

  • Total Knee Arthroplasty – only performed in certain complicated conditions.
  • Partial Knee Arthroplasty – less invasive and has a quicker recovery time than total knee replacement.

Our orthopaedic specialties include:

  • Robotic Joint Replacements
  • Shoulder
  • Hip
  • Hand and Wrist
  • Elbow
  • Foot and Ankle

Hip Replacement

According to the AAPM (American Academy of Pain Medicine), over 100 million Americans suffer from Hip Pain.  That means hip pain affects more people than diabetes and heart disease combined.  The cause of hip pain typically results from arthritis or injury.  Our hip specialists at Performance Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine have the experience and expertise to diagnose the cause of the hip pain and recommend the best treatment solutions.  If hip replacement is the primary solution, our team can offer wonderful treatment solutions.

State-of-the-Art Hip Replacement Options:

Our team offers two approaches to hip replacement:

  • Anterior Approach
  • Anterolateral Approach

What Is The Anterior Approach Hip Replacement?

The anterior approach hip replacement accesses the hip joint from the front of the hip, minimizing trauma to the soft tissue. The surgeon makes a small incision on the front (anterior) of the hip allowing him to work between the muscles and neurovascular structures.   This technique keeps the muscles and tendons intact during surgery thus leading to a fast recovery, minimizing pain and decreasing complications especially that of dislocation.

Advantages of Anterior Hip Replacement

Because the incision is in the front of the hip, patients do not experience the sort of pain caused by sitting on the incision area. Other advantages are:
  • Smaller Incision
  • Reduced Risk of Dislocation
  • Less Blood Loss
  • Less Pain

Anterior Hip Replacement

At Performance Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Dr. Diehl performs the Anterior Approach to hip replacement.  To learn if you are a candidate for this approach, please request an appointment with Dr. Diehl.

What Is The Anterolateral Approach Hip Replacement?

The anterolateral approach hip replacement accesses the hip joint from the side of the hip, allowing preservation of the posterior soft tissue and muscle.  The surgeon makes an incision on the side (lateral) of the hip allowing him direct access to the hip.  This technique reduces the risk of dislocation and hip instability.

Advantages of Anterolateral Hip Replacement

Because the incision is made on the side of the hip, the primary benefit of the Anterolateral Approach is reduced injury to the posterior capsule and not inadvertently injuring the abductor muscles.  Other advantages are:
  • Reduced Risk of Dislocation
  • Reduced Risk of Hip Instability

Anterolateral Hip Replacement

At Performance Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Dr. Maurer performs the Anterolateral Approach to hip replacement.  To learn if you are a candidate for this approach, please request an appointment with Dr. Maurer.

Wonderful Client Feedback

Dr. Diehl always listens and takes the most conservative approach for the injury rather than surgery first. He’s taken care of several of my sprains & falls. Highly recommend.

Dr. Diehl was very kind and caring. I don’t think there is a person in this office who is not professional and personable. They go above and beyond for their patients.
